Challenge

Our team was tasked with developing a mobile-first web application for the 1 MIO project. Considering the socioeconomic limitations of the intended users, we chose to use PWA (Progressive Web Application) development technology. This enabled us to provide a significant portion of the content offline while also offering a website that can handle high levels of traffic without requiring a high-speed internet connection for quick loading.

UNICEF envisioned the 1MIO initiative as a way for socially vulnerable adolescents to find skilled employment and professional training affordably. But first, the organization needed to build a platform that connects employers (UNICEF Partner Companies) with young people in vulnerable situations in Brazil. The platform would serve three types of clients (young people, employer partners, and public institutions) and required a modern look and feel, use of social media timelines, matchmaking of opportunities based on profiles, and a dashboard of opportunities. The goal was to increase brand awareness and engagement.

Approach

Established consumer digital design methodology and execution strategy to increase user engagement. Led digital design scrum team as part of the leadership team and actively participated in story refining and sprint demos. Develop UX/UI concepts based on design language system patterns and validate experiences with users in the lab and at home by partnering with business stakeholders and UX researchers. Iterated design concepts based on feedback and worked with the development team to capture and refine agile user epics and stories.

Results

UNICEF has the potential to create a million opportunities for young people, making a significant impact on millions of lives. The initiative was completed in under three months, and within a year, it has collaborated with over 90 partners, reaching 6.2 million young people through the platform, social media, and events. This effort has led to the creation of 50,000 opportunities, including 10,684 chances to enter the workforce, 11,287 opportunities for quality education, 22,836 opportunities for job training, and 1,000 opportunities for digital inclusion and connectivity.
